Traversées. Limites, cheminements et créations en épigraphie

Publication hybride entre synthèse scientifique et catalogue d’exposition, Traversées témoigne d’une expérience de rencontre entre science et art contemporain autour d’une source de l’histoire, l’inscription ancienne, et sa discipline, l’épigraphie. L’ouvrage en trace l’aventure, depuis les questions posées à la documentation dans le cadre d’un programme de recherche en épigraphie tardo-antique et... médiévale jusqu’à la confluence des explorations historiques et artistiques lors de l’exposition Sendas Epigraficas. Interrogée ici par les chercheurs et chercheuses au titre de ses marges chronologiques, matérielles et alphabétiques, l’objet épigraphique s’affranchit du joug de l’histoire et devient une source d’inspiration pour l’artiste. Mis en ensemble, articles scientifiques, notices d’œuvres, réceptions critiques sur l’exposition et apartés transversaux montrent toute la pertinence d’une mise en lien des pratiques artistiques et historiennes pour penser à nouveau frais l’inscription et ses définitions. Objet éditorial original dans le fond comme dans la forme, Traversées permet le passage de l’œuvre et la source, du geste de l’artiste à celui de l’historien, en résonnance, en variant les itinéraires. La publication cherche ainsi à donner une image vivante du processus de création comme d’une itinérance dans un espace d’exposition tout en engageant à des regards libres sur l’inscription. In fine, Traversées pose la possibilité de l’indiscipline comme modalité de la connaissance.

Traversées is a hybrid publication aiming at merging a traditional collected volume and a catalog of exhibition. It bears witness to an experience of encounter between science and contemporary art, based on ancient inscriptions and epigraphy, their historical discipline. This publication tries to acknowledge the course of this scientific the adventure, from the issues raised by the documentation a...s part of a research program in Late Antique and Medieval epigraphy, to the confluence of historical and artistic explorations during the exhibition Sendas Epigráficas. Studied by scholars for its chronological, material, and alphabetical margins, the inscription frees itself from the weight of history and becomes a source of inspiration for artists. Gathered as a single volume, scientific papers, catalogue entries, critical reception of the exhibition and general thoughts show the relevance of connecting artistic and historic practices to rethink inscription and its definitions. This original editorial project in forms and contents states the links between artworks and sources, from artistic to historical gestures, in harmony, by varying the itineraries and glances. The publication thus seeks to create a living image of the creative process while opening up fresh looks at the inscription. Eventually, Traversées considers the possibility of indiscipline as a modality for knowledge.
